About us
We seek to create an environment where children can connect to Christ and discover the wonder and beauty of His world.
Selah Academy is Harrisonburg’s downtown school offering a Primary class (PreK4-Kindergarten) as well as a Lower Elementary class (grades 1 -3). And new this fall (2026), we will add Preschool to our programming which will serve 3-year-olds and young 4-year-olds. We seek to guide students into vibrant learning through providing opportunities for indoor and outdoor play, reading great books to them, helping them prepare and eat food together, introducing them to music of many kinds, helping them create and appreciate art, teaching them Spanish, guiding them into unhurried, hands-on spiritual formation, and establishing good habits of work and learning. In addition, we value community engagement, which manifests itself in many field trips (2 each week) for our Primary and Lower Elementary classes. One afternoon per week, we walk downtown to neighboring businesses and churches to expand our knowledge of our community. We spend most of another day of the week (for Selah students 5-years-old and up) visiting parks, farms, and other beautiful outdoor spaces to expose students to nature and to different types of sports.
In short, Selah is a Christ-centered, literature-focused, discovery-based, Montessori-inspired school that values the personhood and unique gifts of each child.
Our name, Selah, means “to pause” which is what we want Selah Academy to be! A pause from the chaos and hurry that can so easily surround us. We want Selah to be a place of calm for students and parents alike who enter our doors.
